From Here to Eternity movie was made at Schofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. As a picture of the living conditions of the old, pre-war army, it gives a good picture of life and priorities. Barracks life was communal which drew the soldiers into close-knit, almost family groups. You can attribute team work to this closeness of living together. All the characters represent types of real people, perhaps with the exception of the boxer who quit the ring because of having killed a man. This stock character appears again in “The Quiet Man” with John Wayne.
Interesting note, my grandfather was commander of the 27th Infantry Regiment at Schofield from 1931-1934. My father, as a young teen, remembers the Army Air Corps providing a practice air attack using the same route the Japanese used in 1941.
